Special SundaysFirst Church supports the General Board of Church and Society's designated Special Sundays throughout the year. Human Relations Day calls us to recognize the rights of all God's Children to realize their potential as human beings in relationship with one another. One Great Hour of Sharing is one of the six churchwide Special Sundays which enables UMCOR to live out its mission to alleviate human suffering. Festival of God’s Creation/Earth Day Sunday (the Sunday closest to Earth Day, April 22) is a collaboration of GBCS working with the National Council or Churches Eco-Justice Working Group to produce Festival of God’s Creation resource materials to help congregations celebrate and promote stewardship of God’s creation. International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (June) The United Nations observes this day as a way to help raise awareness about the need to abolish torture throughout the world. Peace with Justice Sunday (first Sunday after Pentecost or July 8 at FUMC) enables the UMC to have a voice in advocating for peace and justice through a broad spectrum of global programs. United Nations Sunday (last Sunday of October) is a day for which the UMC Office for the United Nations prepares resources to commemorate the founding of the United Nations. These resources may be used by local churches. For the entire month of October, we give focus to the joint campaign by the UN Fund for UNICEF and the General Board of Church and Society to undertake Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. World HIV/AIDS Day (December 1) affirms our unity with brothers and sister throughout the world who are suffering from and ministering to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.We not only provide health care to the sick but also work to change public policies that inadequately address HIV/AIDS. Native American Ministries Sunday (May) provides scholarships through the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry for Native Americans attending United Methodist schools of theology and other schools approved by the University Senate of The United Methodist Church. |
