Who We Are:
Wesley Neighborhood, Inc. is a non-profit housing provider run by members of Redding UMC. The 14 individual properties totaling 16 low-income units are located within walking distance to the church on South and Continental streets. A professional property manager oversees the day-to-day rental and maintenance operations of the properties. A monthly landscape maintenance service is used to maintain the outside areas and maintenance contracting personnel are hired as needed. The Wesley Board Members undertake the overall financial and property management and planning such as annual tax, income statements, and non-profit status filings. The board also undertakes twice yearly maintenance service days on the properties to prepare the units for seasonal weather changes. In addition to the two service days, the board has quarterly meetings plus an annual board meeting and dinner celebration.
Our History:
In 1998, First Church created Wesley Neighborhood, Inc. to address the problem of a blighted neighborhood adjacent to the church and to provide quality low-income housing, a"step-up" from what is traditionally available to those with limited resources.
Wesley worked with the City of Redding and the Redding Redevelopment Agency to acquire several properties using federal housing funds available for the purchase and rehabiitation of property for low-income housing. Other agencies involved in this effort were Northern Valley Catholic Social Services, People of Progress, The Garden Tract Neighborood Association, Legal Services of Northern California, Family Planning, Inc., the Health Improvement Partnership, Sequoia Middle School and Cypress Elementary School.
Phase I of the project was completed in late 2001.Phase II was started at this time and was completed at the end of April 2003. In total, 20 residences have been purchased. ot these initial 20, four were deemed beyond repair and were demolished, and 16 units were rehabilitated. In addition, in the early years the Wesley neighborhood provided a home for the establishment of a family resource center to serve the housing, nutritional, and social needs of the low-income residents of the Garden Tract Neighborhood.
Today Wesley is held as a stellar example of our church's commtment to the teachings of Christ within our community and our daily lives.
